About Louise

Louise is a Maine-based freelance editor and author. When she is not playing with words, she can usually be found knitting, reading, or exploring the Maine coastline.

Louise Bates Ayers

Louise is a freelance developmental editor and proofreader with nearly ten years of experience. Under the pen names E.L. Bates and Louise Bates, she is the author of the Whitney & Davies mystery-fantasy series, the Pauline Gray historical mysteries, and more. She is a member of the Maine Writers and Publishers Association and the Editorial Freelance Association, and has a certificate in editing from Poynter ACES. In addition to her work as an editor and author, she has spent time as a library assistant at an academic library in Cambridge, UK, a freelance content writer for various publications, and a home education tutor, for which latter job she also developed and wrote much of her own curriculum. Louise takes great joy in working with authors to help them achieve their vision for their stories. She believes that editing is a collaborative effort, never a battle between author and editor. Her editing goals are to help the author prune away the deadwood so that the story can flourish and to leave the author feeling encouraged and empowered to reach their goals.
